    A special reception honoring "Pioneers, Innovators, Mavericks, and Scholars" - the founding faculty of UC San Diego's Chemistry/Biochemistry, Mathematics, and Physics Departments - was held on November 19, 2010 as part of the campus' 50th Anniversary celebration.   • Meta-Materials Discovery

    In May 2000 D. R. Smith, Willie J. Padilla, D. C. Vier, S. C.Nemat-Nasser, and S. Schultz published an article in Physical Review Letters reporting the first observation of the negative refraction index in a composite medium.

    This seminal work has launched a new research field now commonly referred to as “Metamaterials”. Ten years of research in hundreds of laboratories around the world show that metamaterials are likely to revolutionize both communications and imaging. A first group of commercial products are already emerging.

    On November 4, 2010, we will commemorate this and other discoveries made by Dr. Sheldon (Shelly) Schultz, one of the founding members of the Physics Department at UC San Diego. The day-long symposium on The Discovery of Metamaterials at UCSD will be part of UC San Diego’s 50th Anniversary celebrations, and will include a public lecture by Sir John Pendry and Dr. David Smith entitled "Metamaterials and the science of invisibility". A post-symposium dinner at the Faculty Club is open to symposium participants, other UC San Diego faculty, and their guests*.
